JULY 18, 2007 PRESS RELEASE
Sterling, MA- In a quiet pasture at Davis’ Farmland, Children’s Discovery Farm, there’s a magnificent hairy creature that makes a deep moose-like noise. It’s a water buffalo! At two years old, “Buffalo Bill” could be considered a toddler, except for his weight…940 pounds, and still growing!
Buffalo Bill is new to Davis’ Farmland this summer. Water buffalos typically live in India and Southeast Asia. They are very uncommon in the United States and listed globally as endangered by the National Geographic Society.
Fun Facts:
- True Mozzarella cheese is only made from water buffalo milk.
- Males have enormous backward-curving horns stretching close to 5 feet long, and although smaller in size and weight, female water buffalo also have horns.
- Females typically produce calves every other year.
- Water buffalos are also called Asian buffalos.
- They are the largest member of the Bovini tribe, which also includes yak, bison, and the African buffalo.
- Water buffalos spend most of their day submerged in the muddy waters of Asia’s tropical and subtropical forests.
- Their wide-splayed hoofed feet prevent them from sinking too deeply into the mud and allow them to easily move around in swamps and wetlands.
